Faith
Then, hymnal bindings crack
in the dusty sunlight,
hairspray, straight stories
during prayer, children touch
the soles of shoes in front of them.
An apologetic mother takes
her screaming, sweater-vested son
out the doors while
the number of moons
around Venus shrinks,
and the number of windows
in the church shrinks, too.

Walla Walla University has an active humanities program, which, together with the art and English departments, puts together a student-edited annual art and literature journal, the “Gadfly.” All students, staff, faculty, and alumni are invited to submit items for consideration for inclusion, and many current students are included in the final product each year.
